How to change a shipping address after an order on BigCommerce

OrderEdit.io · 6 min read

A wrong shipping address is the single most common post-order request — and the most time-sensitive, because once a package ships to the wrong place, you're into reships, refunds and an unhappy customer.

Editing an address in the BigCommerce admin

If the order hasn't shipped, a staff member can open the order in the BigCommerce control panel and edit the shipping address directly. That works fine for the occasional fix — but at volume, every change means a customer email, a staff lookup, and a manual edit.

The faster path: let the customer fix it

Most address corrections happen within minutes of checkout, while the customer is still paying attention. If you give them a short self-service window, they can update the address themselves — including country/region — without ever opening a ticket.

Keep it safe with a time window

The risk with self-service address edits is someone changing the destination after fulfillment. Bound it: allow address edits only inside a window you set (15 minutes up to until-fulfillment), and the option closes automatically once the order moves to shipping.

Handle after-hours gracefully

An order placed Friday night shouldn't show a timer that expires before you reopen. A countdown that pauses outside business hours shows a realistic deadline like "Until Monday 9:15 AM" — so customers know they still have time.
